Sawaeid – Child Protection Annex
This Child Protection Annex forms an integral part of Sawaeid’s Safeguarding Policy and is aligned with UK Charity Commission guidance, UK safeguarding principles, and international humanitarian best practice. It applies to all volunteers, staff, partners, contractors, and representatives acting on behalf of Sawaeid.
1. Core Child Protection Principles
Sawaeid is committed to ensuring that all children are protected from harm. The following principles guide our work:
• The welfare of the child is paramount.
• All children have equal rights to protection regardless of background.
• Zero tolerance for abuse, exploitation, or neglect.
• Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
• Children’s voices must be heard and respected.
2. Definition of a Child
For the purposes of this policy, a child is defined as any person under the age of 18, in line with UK law and international conventions.
3. Prohibited Conduct
Volunteers and staff must never:
• Engage in sexual activity with a child.
• Touch a child inappropriately or invade personal boundaries.
• Use language or behaviour that is abusive, humiliating, or degrading.
• Spend time alone with a child without authorisation and supervision.
• Exchange aid, money, gifts, or favours for attention or compliance.
• Take photographs or videos of children without informed consent.
4. Safe Working Practices with Children
All personnel must:
• Treat children with respect and dignity at all times.
• Ensure activities are open, observable, and safe.
• Obtain consent from parents or guardians where possible.
• Use appropriate language and behaviour.
• Report any concerns immediately.
• Follow Sawaeid guidance on media and data protection.
5. Reporting Child Protection Concerns
Any suspicion, allegation, or disclosure of abuse must be reported immediately to the Sawaeid Safeguarding Officer or designated lead. Delays or failures to report may result in disciplinary action. Reports will be handled confidentially and sensitively.
6. Safer Recruitment & Vetting
Sawaeid applies safer recruitment practices including:
• Identity verification
• Reference checks where appropriate
• DBS or equivalent background checks for roles involving children
• Mandatory safeguarding training
7. Breaches & Disciplinary Action
Any breach of this Child Protection Annex may result in suspension, termination of volunteering duties, referral to authorities, or other appropriate action.
